Intended Use & Safety

Last updated: 8 October 2026

This page explains what the products sold by Shop Essential Pack are for, who may buy them, and the limits of what we can advise. It forms part of our Terms of Service, and placing an order means you accept it.

1. What these products are for

Every product sold on this site is supplied for use with ornamental aquarium fish — fish kept in home or hobby aquariums and ornamental ponds, including tropical community fish, cichlids, goldfish and koi.

They are not supplied for, and must not be used for:

  • human use of any kind, including self-medication;
  • fish or other animals raised, kept or harvested for food;
  • dogs, cats, horses, livestock, reptiles, or any other companion or production animal;
  • any veterinary use directed at an animal other than an ornamental fish.

Some items in our range are labelled by their manufacturer for ornamental fish and for non-food pet birds. Where that is the case it is stated on the product page. Outside of those stated uses, the restrictions above apply.

2. We cannot give medical or veterinary advice

Nothing on this website — product descriptions, collection pages, FAQs, blog content or email replies from our team — is medical advice, veterinary advice, diagnosis, or a treatment recommendation. We are a retailer, not a veterinary practice, and no one on our team is licensed to diagnose or prescribe.

We are not able to:

  • tell you what is wrong with a fish, or any other animal;
  • recommend a product, dose, duration or combination for any individual animal;
  • advise on use in any species other than ornamental fish;
  • comment on human use in any circumstances.

We can tell you what we stock, what the active ingredient and strength of a product is, what format it comes in, how many units are in a pack, and what the manufacturer's own labelling says. For anything beyond that, please consult a licensed veterinarian who can examine the animal.

If a person is unwell, contact a doctor, a pharmacist or your local emergency service. Do not use anything sold on this site.

3. Who may order

You must be 18 years of age or older to place an order with Shop Essential Pack. By completing checkout you confirm that you meet this requirement and that the products you are buying are intended for ornamental aquarium fish.

We ship within the United States only. We do not accept orders placed for export, and we do not ship to freight forwarders.

4. Responsible use in the aquarium

These points are general background about how aquarium treatments behave. They are not instructions for treating a particular animal.

  • Biological filtration. Antibacterial products reduce the nitrifying bacteria that drive a tank's nitrogen cycle. Broad-spectrum products generally have more effect than narrow-spectrum ones. Many aquarists treat in a separate hospital tank for this reason and monitor ammonia and nitrite closely during and after a course.
  • Invertebrates and plants. Some treatments, particularly copper-based products, are harmful to shrimp, snails and other invertebrates and can affect live plants.
  • Unnecessary use. Using antibacterial products when they are not needed, stopping a course early, or using them as a routine preventative contributes to resistant bacteria. This is a real problem in the hobby and a reason to identify the problem before reaching for a treatment.
  • Manufacturer labelling. Always read the label and insert supplied with the product. Where the manufacturer's instructions differ from anything written on this site, follow the manufacturer.

5. Storage and handling

  • Keep products in their original sealed container until use.
  • Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Check the lot number and expiry date printed on the packaging before use, and dispose of expired stock responsibly — not into drains or waterways.

6. Allergies and exposure

Some of the ingredients in these products are ones to which people can be allergic. Handle with clean dry hands, avoid breathing in powders, and wash your hands afterwards. If you have a known allergy to a substance, do not handle products containing it. If someone swallows a product, or has a reaction after handling one, contact a doctor or your local poison control service immediately.

7. Acceptance of risk

Aquarium keeping involves risk, and treating a sick fish does not guarantee that it will recover. Outcomes depend on water quality, how far a condition has progressed, the species involved, and many factors outside our control. You accept that risk when you buy, and you are responsible for how the products are used once they reach you.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Shop Essential Pack is not liable for loss of livestock, damage to an aquarium or its contents, or any other loss arising from the use or misuse of products bought from us. This does not limit any right you have under US federal or Michigan state law that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing here excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.

8. Reporting a problem

If you believe a product you received is damaged, mislabelled, past its expiry date, or not what you ordered, stop using it and contact us straight away. We will replace or refund it — see our Refund Policy.
